Meet Dr. Liz Fernandez

Liz Fernandez

DVM, CVA, MA

Elizabeth A. Fernandez, DVM, CVA, MA, is a licensed Doctor of Veterinary Medicine, public speaker, author, and consultant with a holistic house-call practice in Southern California.

She is certified in Veterinary Hospice and Palliative Care, Veterinary Acupuncture, and Traditional Chinese Veterinary Medicine.

At the age of five, young Liz was asked the question of what she wanted to be when she grew up. She took this question very seriously and went to her mother for advice. “You want to do something you love,” her mom answered. Liz knew, at that time, that she loved animals and she loved medicine. This was when she decided that she would become a veterinarian.

After graduating from UC Davis Veterinary school in 1982, Dr. Liz spent the next 25 years working in general small animal practice and emergency medicine. She always had an interest in acupuncture and Chinese medicine and, when a shoulder injury led her to seek “non-Western” acupuncture treatment for herself, she knew she wanted to offer this same modality to her animal patients. While continuing her work in veterinary medicine, she completed extensive training in Veterinary Acupuncture, Chinese Herbal Medicine, Tui-Na, and Food Therapy. These specialized certifications qualified her as a Traditional Chinese Veterinary Medicine Practitioner. Dr. Liz opened Acupuncture For Pets in 2002, offering acupuncture and traditional Chinese medicine through a holistic, integrative house-call practice.

Over the course of her career, she has counseled countless clients through the difficult end-of-life decision-making process for their pets.

Inspired by these many experiences, Dr. Liz published the book, Sacred Gifts of a Short Life: Uncovering the Wisdom of our Pets End-of-Life Journeys, in 2016. The book became an Amazon #1 bestseller in the Veterinary category upon its debut.

Her patience and passion for guiding her clients through this process led her to become one of the first veterinarians certified by both IAAHPC in “Hospice and Palliative Care,” as well as the Chi University in “Traditional Chinese Veterinary Medicine Palliative and End-of-Life Care.”

In 2019, Dr. Liz launched Wisdom Paws, which offers pet end-of-life guidance, education and support to the public as well as the veterinary community. She covers topics such as dealing with guilt, doubt, and others’ opinions; remaining present and grounded; and much more. For the veterinary community, she offers approaches that support self care, compassion and resiliency.

Dr. Liz offers straightforward strategies for embracing a perspective of death that acknowledges the devastation that can be experienced and the sacred gifts that are also present.
